Cookbook sales fund refugee scholarship

AUT students from refugee backgrounds can now apply for a scholarship fund created from the sales of the Tastes of Home cookbook.

The cookbook was created after volunteer collaborators were inspired by a common desire to improve former refugees’ access to tertiary education. They came together to co-create a cookbook featuring family recipes and stories of AUT staff, students and alumni from refugee and migrant backgrounds.

All proceeds from the sale of the Tastes of Home go towards the new scholarship fund to support successful completion of a degree at AUT.

Business Student Amina Mohamed said she became part of the project because of what the scholarship meant to her as a former refugee. “I thought it was really important to give back to my community. There aren’t a lot of scholarships for refugees out there, so I thought this was a really great way to be part of something that is wider than just myself,” she said.

Maree Jeurissen, Manager ESOL, Migrant and Refugee Education at the Ministry of Education says the cookbook is a great initiative, bringing together cultures from both refugees and New Zealanders. “It’s great to see the New Zealand culture coming together with the cultures of some of the former refugees. Food is something we can all share and enjoy together,” she said.
