Christchurch tragedy
We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events in Christchurch.
As a University with a diverse student community, this attack on mosques in Christchurch devastates us. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their friends and families.
We can assure students, parents, staff and our community that AUT is working closely with the New Zealand Police and have taken steps to ensure the safety of people on campus. Our study spaces and prayer rooms remain open, and Security, along with the Police, are monitoring closely. These are precautionary measures and we understand there is no immediate risk.
AUT’s Student Services and Counselling service will be available to respond as required, including individual support and special considerations on compassionate grounds.
As always, the Emergency Services number is 111. Other security concerns can be reported on x9997 or 0800 AUT SAFE (0800 288 7233).
Anyone needing support can call or text 1737 free anytime to talk with a trained counsellor or visit the on-campus Security Offices where staff will provide you with access to support over the weekend. AUT staff can also make use of the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) by calling Stratos on 0800 787 2867 (0800 STRATOS).
Update: Reflection spaces
Coming together as a community can be helpful after shocking events like Friday’s attack. At AUT we have dedicated spaces on each campus where anyone who would like to gather is welcome.

- North Campus: AF113 – Foyer area
- City Campus: WG Level 3 - opposite Newsfeed
Each of these spaces have staff in attendance, a book and board to write and share thoughts. Students, staff and members of the public are invited to join us.
