AUT welcomes our new scholars
180 undergraduate students who are recipients of the Vice Chancellor, New Horizons and Kiwa - scholarships were received at the Scholar's Welcome on Tuesday.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Geoff Perry welcomed the students to AUT and congratulated them on their success. Third year Bachelor of Science student; Vice Chancellor Scholar and Acting President of AUTSA; Nadine Tupp and UniPrep Navigator Menorah Gafa; who is a second year Bachelor of Business student and an AUT New Horizons Scholar, also spoke to the students, offering some valuable insights into life at AUT.
Triplets Chloe, Roselle and Chanel Samaratunga, from Avondale were among those to receive a scholarship. Roselle and Chanel received the Vice Chancellor's Significant Student Scholarship while Chloe received the New Horizons Scholarship. Chloe and Roselle will both be doing a Bachelor of Science, and Chanel will be doing a Bachelor of Business.
Chanel said that when she found out she and her sisters had received the scholarships, they cried together.
"It was the most amazing feeling, I never thought I'd be a recipient of such a prestigious scholarship. Building connections with people along the way will be an exciting part of the journey," she said.
Vice Chancellor's Significant Student Scholarship recipient Caleb Jamieson who will be doing a Bachelor of Laws and Business said he made it his goal to work towards a scholarship to AUT in his last of year school.
"Receiving the scholarship is also a confidence thing, as now I know I can get through my degree and get a job if I put in the work," he said.
The AUT Vice Chancellor's Significant Student Scholarship is awarded to students demonstrating leadership through academic excellence and achievement at a high level in sporting, cultural pursuits or community involvement. This year 96 recipients were selected.
The AUT Kiwa Undergraduate Scholarship (Māori and Pacific Students) existsfor academically able students demonstrating leadership potential who register with either Māori or Pacific ethnicity. This year's intake is 19 students.
22 students are this year's recipients of the AUT New Horizons Scholarship.It is awarded to academically able students who can demonstrate leadership potential from Auckland Regions Decile 1 – 4 schools.
The welcome event was also extended to recipients of other scholarship and study awards including the Keir Trust Study Award, the AUT Bachelor of Science Scholarships and the AUT Undergraduate Scholarship Engineering.
