As part of AUT’s new partnership with Auckland FC, AUT staff and students have had the opportunity to join the 80 plus volunteers who assist the club at home games.
Representing the University in their AUT t-shirts, AUT’s volunteer cohort made its Auckland FC volunteer debut at a packed-out April 5th game, with another group set to volunteer at the 27th April game against the Perth Glory.
Auckland FC are currently placed at top of the table in the A-League making it an especially exciting point in the season for AUT whānau to be involved.
The volunteer group included many international students from China, India, St Lucia, Jamaica, and the Philippines. After completing their two-hour volunteer duty, the students were able to then watch the game for free.
A further benefit of students volunteering at Auckland FC games is that they can put this voluntary time and experience towards an AUT Edge Award.
Master of Cyber Security and Digital Forensics student, Kevin Johnson says, “We've just arrived in Auckland and I’d heard so much about this team. Volunteering at the match was a novel experience; the atmosphere and vibe were very electrifying, and the excitement was palpable. The kids were so excited once they got the posters we were handing out and saw the starting line-ups,” he says.
For AUT Master of Science in Food Science student Louanna Johnny, the Auckland FC volunteering experience was a delight.
“I felt a bit of jubilation each time a kid or grown up expressed genuine pleasure in receiving one of the posters I was handing out.
“Some of the fans did not disappoint with their colours, costume and big exuberant energy which was actually a joy for me at the gates. I’d definitely recommend that other students join the volunteer team, and I’d also say - you never know, you might just become a major fan after a few volunteer runs!”
Similarly, for AUT Master of Laws student Annamary Kachappilly, being involved in the game and part of something that brings joy to others made her truly happy
“After volunteering, getting to watch the game and soaking in the electrifying stadium atmosphere was unforgettable. I’d absolutely recommend it to other students—it’s a fun and rewarding way to get involved in the community, meet new people, and enjoy a fantastic game!"
