AUT students head to Huawei HQ in China
Six lucky AUT students are this month getting the rare opportunity to go behind the doors of Huawei HQ in Shenzhen and see what is involved in being the world’s biggest telecommunications technology retailer.
In 2014, Huawei, the Chinese tech company teamed up with AUT for a partnership which gives computer science and engineering students the opportunity to travel to China to see its offices, R&D centre and factory and learn more about Chinese culture.
In 2015, the two week trip will include cultural experiences where in the first week, students will be immersed in Chinese culture, and visit the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.
The second week they travel to Shenzhen for a technology crash-course involving hands-on-tutorials, lectures from key Huawei employees and factory tours.
The group is made up of BCIS students Mathew Cain, Tim Daly, Sabrina Jay and Fred Palemene and BEngTech students Laura Stapley and Richard Oxton.
The head of External Relations & Development for the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences Stephen Thorpe says it is an unprecedented opportunity for the students.
“The students are so lucky to be exposed to the day to day operations of one of the largest technology companies in the world. No technology companies in New Zealand come close to the enormity of the Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen. What they learn in that week at Huawei HQ will hopefully inspire them to look at a future career in this incredibly fast-moving industry.”
He says AUT is extremely lucky to have a relationship with Huawei.
“This relationship demonstrates the importance AUT places on our students getting real world insights and experience. It shows how universities and big tech companies have the power to drive global growth and influence educational opportunities.”
This year’s students will travel be in China from the 14th till 28th November.

Under the partnership arrangement, Huawei also offers fees scholarships annually to AUT Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences students studying at the AUT South Campus.
This year’s scholarship winners are Racheal Herlihy, Atolo Kiu Pongi ,Astuthi Prakash ,Andre Welagen and Inderjit Singh Janjua.
