AUT staff behind canoe racing bid
AUT senior research fellows, Dr Dan Plews and Dr Adam Storey, are helping the New Zealand women's canoe racing team in their bid for Olympic gold. The CRNZ Women's Olympics team, comprised of two-time defending Olympic champion Lisa Carrington, Caitlin Regal, Alicia Hoskin and Teneale Hatton, is a medal favourites for Tokyo.
Dr Storey is the national lead of strength and conditioning for Canoe Racing New Zealand. In this role, he has directly worked with the New Zealand Women's Sprint Kayak team during their preparations for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Dr Plews is the team's lead performance physiologist. His role is to work with coaches to analyse training and related data, in order to implement changes to optimise the training program. Working alongside him in this role is former AUT MSc student Mathew Mildenhall. Dr Plews has been in this role since 2016, prior to which he did the same role for the New Zealand Rowing team for both males and females.
Both Dr Plews and Dr Storey were also involved in training Emirates Team New Zealand for the Americas Cup.
