AUT responds to teacher shortage by providing teaching programmes at its campus in South Auckland.
AUT’s School of Education head Lyn Lewis says AUT will respond to demand from those wanting to study teaching in South and East Auckland.
From March next year AUT will offer the Bachelor of Education Early Childhood Education (BEd ECE), the Bachelor of Education Primary (BEd Primary) and the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching at its South campus in Manukau.
AUT will offer 40 places in each of the BE courses and the Secondary Grad Dip but if there is greater demand it will take more, says Lewis. “We would be responsive to the demand.”
The BEd are both three year degrees and the Grad Dip in Secondary is a one year course.
AUT sought and gained dispensation from a government moratorium on initial teacher education, in order to expand its teacher education programmes to offer them at the AUT South campus in South Auckland. Lewis says there are currently substantial numbers of education students travelling from south and southeast Auckland to the university’s City and North campuses.
“We also consulted with stakeholders in the south including principals, teachers and community leaders and have had overwhelming support.”
Other AUT education programmes available at the South campus next year are:

* Postgraduate Certificates in Education (Science Education; Innovations in Education; Mentoring, Steiner Education)
* Master of Education
* Master of Education Practice
* Master of Educational Leadership
AUT will continue to offer education courses at its North and City campuses.
