AUT number one for sport science in NZ
The prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released their Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments. AUT’s School of Sport and Recreation improved its ranking from the #51-100 band in 2017 rising to #46 in the world this year.
AUT’s rise means that as well as being the highest ranked university for sport science in New Zealand the School is also number ten in Australasia.
Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including papers indexed in Web of Science, total citations, citations per paper, papers published in top 25% journals, and percentage of internationally collaborated papers.
AUT’s rise can be attributed to its significant increase in citations per paper, which reflects the quality and impact of research output. AUT has been traditionally strong in international research collaboration and was ranked at 6th in the world this year, one place above last year’s result, in international co-authorship.
“The courses offered at the School of Sport & Recreation have been developed through world-leading research and input from top industry partners,” said Professor Erika Hinckson, Head of the School of Sport and Recreation.
“As New Zealand’s leading sports university, it is pleasing to see that AUT is recognised internationally for our sport science courses,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, Professor Max Abbott.
ShanghaiRanking published this ranking for the first time in 2016. In order to be considered by ARWU, universities must either be a sport university or have a sport-related unit and publish a certain number of Web of Science papers (actively engaging in research) in the past five years. The top 300 universities were selected and ranked this year.
