AUT hosting nearly 1,000 Y13 students

AUT’s student recruitment team is hosting nearly 1,000 Year 13 students through its school programme this year, including students from schools as far south as Whakatipu and as far north as Kaitaia.

The one-day or overnight campus experiences provide year 13s with a first-hand insight into what it would be like to be an AUT student and are designed to support them through their tertiary education decision-making process.

Olivia Sidhu, Lead, Student Recruitment (Secondary Schools), says, ‘The 17 and 18 year-olds attend interactive workshops and tours with academic staff as well as presentations about the University’s student services, from social clubs to sporting and cultural opportunities, and accommodation options’.

“Some of our visiting school groups also take part in a one-hour, AUT-style amazing race so the students can familiarise themselves with getting around the AUT City Campus.

“Our programme is designed to be informative, engaging and enriching for every student who attends. We tailor it to suit their needs and interests as we want them to finish their visit feeling supported and in a strong position to decide on their AUT study options,” Olivia says.

The regional school groups, including those from Northland and Otago, have been hosted at AUT’s new student accommodation next to the City Campus.

Students take home course material to talk about with their whānau and are encouraged to continue conversations with the AUT Future Students Team via our web and phone channels or in a one on one, course counselling setting for more tailored and personalised advice.

Following her visit with 160 St Cuthbert’s students, Head of Careers, Rhonda Vink, said ‘Thank you to you and all of your team for a fabulous day. The students were all really happy and as you said, they showed their engagement and enthusiasm for learning. From what I observed and heard back from others, the day was spot on’. STEM Camp for Māori Year 13 students

Later in 2022 AUT will host a STEM Camp; a mini on-campus experience for Māori Year 13 students from around the North Island. Developed between the Student Recruitment team and the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Science, the programme will see 50 students spend four days and three nights at AUT’s City Campus. While at AUT the students will engage with academics in their chosen area (from computer science, engineering and science) and stay at AUT’s student accommodation as well as spending a night at Ngā Wai o Horotiu Marae.
