North Campus' new A1 building has been on hold since 2019 as a result of COVID. Recently the AUT Council approved the recommencement of A1 after a lengthy retendering process.
Before COVID interrupted the A1 project, early enabling work phases were completed such as demolition of nearby buildings, general site earthworks and relocations of staff. The strip out and facade works on North Campus' AF building continue as this building will eventually be integrated into the new A1 building.
Group Director Estates, David Curry, is excited that such a major project for the university has been given the go-ahead.
"When it is complete, the A1 Building will have a transformative effect on the North Campus, much as the Sir Paul Reeves Building did at the City Campus. It should really improve the student experience at North, something that has been one of our key priorities for some time now. The project is also a positive milestone in AUT’s recovery from the effects of Covid-19," he says.
The building contract for the construction of A1 has been awarded to Naylor Love. From early in 2022 further site enabling works will commence and we expect construction proper to begin in early April 2022.
When complete in 2024, A1 Building will provide a central heart for North Campus, along with teaching facilities, office space, and much-needed social and collaborative learning space. As part of the A1 project AF building will be completely refurbished and integrated with the new A1 building.
