A scholarship to help existing students
The Freemasons Scholarship is an excellent opportunity for AUT students to get financial support for their study. Available to AUT students who are active in their involvement in the community, the deadline for applications is 1 October.
Offered annually, there are two types of scholarships:
- The University Scholarships (award value of $6,000), are available for students entering their final year of a full-time course of study for a Bachelor degree or Bachelor degree with Honours.
- The Postgraduate Scholarship (award value of $10,000), are available for students studying full-time in a postgraduate qualification including a Postgraduate Diploma, Masters degree or Doctoral degree.
This year, The Freemasons Charity will be awarding 20 University Scholarships and eight Postgraduate Scholarships across eight participating universities including AUT.
Scholarship recipient – Nadine Tupp
Fourth-year Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) student Nadine Tupp, received the Freemasons University Scholarship in March. A competitive powerlifter, Nadine can often be spotted training at the AUT gym or working at the reception. They have also been involved in many areas of the University, including being a faculty representative and a short stint as the Acting President of AUTSA.
Nadine’s area of research looks into moving away from a traditionally Western model of conservation, towards finding a just and effective model where diverse voices are heard. They also volunteer extensively with the likes of the Department of Conservation and Sustainable Coastlines.
First hearing about this opportunity from the Scholarships Office, it was Nadine’s love for learning and community work that enabled them to be awarded the Freemasons Scholarship. The scholarship has allowed them to return to study to pursue the research they are passionate about.
“I love learning, developing ideas and hopefully doing something good and positive for people. Trying to tackle study fees while also living and paying rent in Auckland is difficult, so this gave me the ability to continue my study without some of that financial pressure,” says Nadine.
They encourage everyone to apply or at least find out more. “Start a conversation with someone from the Scholarships Office, they can help you find things that you are eligible for or tell you what you could do to become eligible for things like that in the future.”
Selection criteria
Applicants for the scholarships must:
- Have a good academic record
- Be a New Zealand citizen or hold a permanent New Zealand residency
- Demonstrate good citizenship
- Show leadership potential
- Have proven community commitment
Applicants do not need:
- A family association with the Freemasonry is not a criterion for the award of a scholarship.
