REYEDR in the running for $2m in funding
Two AUT alumni bringing augmented reality to motorcyclists have landed a coveted spot in the Luminate Accelerator Programme based in New York.
Simon Waters, who completed a Bachelor of Creative Technologies at Colab, and Jens Steinigen, who was awarded a Bachelor of Computer and Information Science, both graduated from AUT in 2015. The pair went on to co-found (with current CEO Kal Gwalani) REYEDR - a startup that had developed a heads-up display that attaches to a motorcycle helmet and shows riders their speed, navigation, distance and more.
The device, which is retrofitted to existing helmets, uses holographic technology to display information in a rider's line of sight, so they can keep track of their ride without taking their eyes off the road.
Operating as Mango teQ Ltd and based in Rochester New York, the REYEDR team were selected as one of just 10 startups competing in the Luminate Accelerator Programme - the only accelerator programme for startups with optics, photonics and imaging applications.
As part of REYEDR's entry in the programme, the company received an initial $100,000 investment and will participate in a six-month programme, culminating in a Demo Day in late June where they will compete for $2m in additional funding.
