Physiotherapy students are buzzing with anticipation about heading into the workplace after attending the Match Ready Employability Experience in early March.
The AUT Employability team, in conjunction with the Physiotherapy Department, ran the day-long event that was packed with practical employability advice from both career specialists and industry partners.
A major highlight of the event was the afternoon session with representatives from the three Auckland DHBs; Auckland, Counties and Waitemata.
Over 130 students made the most of these informative real-time sessions, gaining hot tips on recruitment processes, then meeting with DHB representatives to ask further questions.
The morning sessions included a comprehensive breakdown of how ACC works from a practitioner viewpoint and a session on knowing your rights with employment contracts. Delivered by Pam Nuttall, a senior lecturer from the AUT Law School, the employment contract session gave straightforward, valuable information on a very current topic: your legal rights in the workplace as an employee or an independent contractor.
“The information about employer contracts was highly beneficial to us because it helps us know what we are getting into,” says one student.
The writing of CVs and cover letters and the skills involved in job interviews was also covered during the morning sessions.
“It was really beneficial to go through the whole CV structure point by point. This is really going to help me when I start to apply for jobs,” commented one student, reflecting the positive responses of many others at the sessions.
Director of Student Employability Anna Williams described the event as a resounding success with fantastic collaboration between the Physiotherapy Department and AUT Employability.
Match Ready Employability Experience Events will be held throughout the year across AUT.
