Honours society inducts new members

On 4 October, the AUT Business School inducted 95 new members into the Beta Gamma Sigma Society.

Beta Gamma Sigma is a prestigious international honours society that recognises the academic achievements and excellence of top business students around the world. Only business schools accredited by AACSB International are invited to establish a BGS Chapter.

The AUT Business School gained AACSB accreditation in 2011 and launched a Beta Gamma Sigma NZ chapter in 2012. Currently, only students gaining business qualifications from AUT and the University of Auckland can become BGS members. BGS has more than 590 chapters in over 190 countries, making it the world’s largest network of business alumni. In New Zealand, approximately 1000 graduates are members of the BGS NZ chapter.

AUT values strong relationships with its notable alumni and the AUT Business School is proud to have a close association with the New Zealand Chapter of BGS. The BGS NZ member network is actively promoted via the recently launched website. The website includes networking events, professional development workshops, benefits for members, job opportunities, and community participation.

The inductees and their guests were warmly welcomed by Professor Kate Kearins, Dean – AUT Business School, followed by an excellent outline of the Society’s mission and objectives by the current President of the BGS NZ Chapter, Mario Vulinovich.

The personal story of keynote speaker, Brittany Teei, Founder and Managing Director of KidsCoin, illustrated the founding principles and values of Beta Gamma Sigma outlined by Mario; those of honour and integrity, pursuit of wisdom, earnestness, and service. KidsCoin is a financial empowerment technology company that uses digital tools to build healthy habits and mindsets with children in schools across New Zealand.

The Business School was also delighted to induct long-time friend and supporter Bernard Te Paa into Beta Gamma Sigma as the 2018 honorary member. Bernard (Ngāti Whātua, Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri, Waikato) successfully led Auckland Council’s Māori economic development programme and implemented its approach to establishing relationships with iwi entities.

After receiving their certificates, BGS members, their friends and family, and AUT staff enjoyed mingling over congratulatory drinks and nibbles.

About BGS

Beta Gamma Sigma was established in the United States in 1913. A lifelong commitment to its members’ academic and professional success is defined in the society’s mission, “to encourage and honour academic achievement in the study of business, to foster personal and professional excellence, to advance the values of the Society, and to serve its lifelong members”.

Those eligible for membership are the high achieving graduates of a business degree programme.
