Employability Matters attracts employers
How do you help students meet employers when they are also extremely busy studying? The answer at AUT has been to develop Employability Matters.
Over a week, this series of events brings a diverse range of employers into the university to interact with AUT students.
Now in its third year, Employability Matters has gone from strength to strength with the inclusion in 2017 of two new career fairs for law and hospitality, tourism, events and culinary arts, as well as a volunteering showcase.
Employers come on campus to participate in workshops, panel discussions and one-on-one chats, as well as delivering formal presentations on their organisational and industry needs.
There are also inspirational leadership speakers, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern drawing the biggest crowds last April, when she was still deputy opposition leader.
A large motivation for many employers is recruiting students for graduate programmes as well as internships and part-time positions. A number also find Employability Matters a good way to showcase their brand and what they have to offer in the workplace.
In 2017, employers signing up for events during Employability Matters included Xero, KiwiRail, Air NZ, Westpac, ATEED, NZME, Heritage Group, Vodafone, Rocket Lab and ANZ Technology.
