2022 Pat Hanly Creativity Awards

Auckland Art Gallery Toi O Tamaki hosted the annual Pat Hanly Creativity Awards on 8 September, recognising 89 talented senior visual art students from 47 secondary schools and kura throughout the greater Tāmaki Makaurau region. The recipients of the Awards, along with their whānau and teachers, were honoured at the gala event.

Sponsored by AUT, the awards recognise secondary school students nominated by their kaiako for outstanding creativity, imagination and commitment to the visual arts.

Named in honour of late artist Pat Hanly (1932 – 2004), the awards acknowledge his outstanding contribution to New Zealand contemporary art and his passion for art education and supporting young artists.

The awards also bring into focus to the role of art education in shaping future creatives and helping them connect with the wider art community.

This year the awards were presented by Pat Hanly’s granddaughter Lillian Hanly, Auckland Art Gallery’s Dr Isabel Haarhaus-Michell, and Dr Sue Gallagher from AUT’s School of Art and Design.

Head of AUT’s School of Art and Design, Professor Mandy Smith, who was on this year’s judging panel, said the calibre of the artwork was outstanding.

“The next generation of young artists are pushing the boundaries of creativity by responding to the issues of the modern world and exploring the possibilities of their work”, she said.
