The Department of Accounting at AUT is hosting the 2024 Accounting Case Competition online on Thursday 12 September 2024.
This online event is mainly aimed at participants and audiences from universities across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. However, students representing other universities around the globe are also welcome to compete in the online event.

Key dates
- 1 August 2024 – Registration deadline
- 8 August 2024 – All registered students will be invited to attend a one-hour online mentoring and information session to help them succeed in the competition
- 30 August 2024 – Case report submission deadline
- 5 September 2024 – Finalists will be announced
- 12 September 2024 – Finalists will present their case solutions before the judges
Prizes
- The first-place winner: NZD 1,500
- The second-place winner: NZD 1,000
- The third-place winner: NZD 500
- All winning and non-winning finalist teams will receive a digital certificate

Frequently asked questions
- To increase students’ awareness of the importance of understanding accounting in relation to contemporary issues such as social impact, sustainability, technology advancement, and artificial intelligence.
- To expose students to real-life accounting-related problems they may encounter in their future careers.
- To provide students with the opportunity to sharpen their problem-solving and presentation skills on contemporary accounting issues.
- Students who are currently studying at a university are invited to participate in the competition in teams of 2-3 members.
- An individual team can consist of current students from the same or different universities across any programme (i.e., undergraduate and postgraduate).
- A chance to win your share of the NZD 3,000 prize pool.
- Get feedback and work with mentors and judges from accounting academics and practitioners.
- Enhance your CV and increase your employability.
- Sharpen your critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Each team will need to register their interest by 1 August 2024.
- After that, students will be invited to attend a one-hour online mentoring and information session on 8 August 2024.
- Following that, students will have till 30 August 2024 to submit their written reports on our “Case Problem”. Students can submit their reports to accounting.socialimpact@aut.ac.nz
- After these submissions are reviewed, finalists will be announced on 5 September 2024.
- Then, finalists will present their case solutions before the judges online on 12 September 2024. Students will have 10 minutes to present their case solutions, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session.
