Mō Eke Tangaroa About Eke Tangaroa

AUT's three-year Eke Tangaroa programme recruits an annual cohort of early career academics of Māori and/or Pacific ancestry who have not previously held a permanent full-time academic role at a New Zealand university.

We want AUT to be a place where Māori and Pacific academics are actively involved in all of the university's activities, from teaching, to research, to leadership. AUT strives to be the university of choice for Māori and Pacific academics, and Eke Tangaroa represents that aspiration by growing and fostering our Māori and Pacific early academic community. Eke Tangaroa aims to help Māori and Pacific early career academics contribute to and benefit from teaching, research and academic citizenship at AUT.

Who can be appointed through the Eke Tangaroa programme?

Eke Tangaroa seeks to appoint doctorally-qualified early career academics. The disciplines in which vacancies are available are advertised when recruitment opens each year in May or June.

To be eligible to be appointed through the Eke Tangaroa programme you must:

  1. Be of Māori or Indigenous Pacific ancestry.
  2. Not have held a permanent full-time academic position in a university before.
  3. Hold a completed PhD or other doctoral degree (graduation no more than 6 years prior to application), or be close to completion (under examination, or nearing submission for examination at the time of application).

**Pacific here refers to indigenous people from those island nations constituting the realm of New Zealand, and those whose people form significant parts of the New Zealand population through longstanding cultural and economic relationships. For the purposes of Eke Tangaroa, eligible scholars will be people with ancestry from: Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga, iTaukei Fiji, Rotuma, Tuvalu and Kiribati.
