Piki Ake Transition Programme

This national programme aims to support Māori postgraduate students to prepare for transitioning into academic careers. It was initiated in 2023 by the Research Committee and Te Kāhui Amokura, the Māori Committee, of Te Pōkai Tara - Universities New Zealand

About this programme

  • For Māori and Pasifika doctoral students (master’s degree research students may be accepted on a case-by-case basis – apply to the coordinator)
  • 14-week online programme
  • No costs for participating
  • Runs in Semester 2 (July to October)
  • A local coordinator overseen with national coordination
  • Course consists of 6 two-week self-study modules plus 2 half-day online wānanga with all the groups around the motu, as well as any local activities organised by the coordinator
  • Topics covered in each module introduce participants to various aspects of working in a university

Te Kei Māori Academic Development Programme

This national programme aims to support the career growth of Māori early career academics, and runs under the auspices of Te Kāhui Amokura, the Māori Committee of of Te Pōkai Tara - Universities New Zealand

Te Kei operates through an annual cohort model. Each university is asked to fund the attendance of between two and five Māori early career academic staff each year.

About the programme

  • For Māori early career academics (between 1 and 7 years’ experience) working at a New Zealand university
  • Participants need to attend:
    • An initial 3-day residential programme, held in Wellington in August
    • Online follow up cohort meetings

MAI ki Aronui

As the AUT branch of a national network designed to support Māori and Indigenous postgraduate students, MAI ki Aronui holds regular weekend wānanga at Ngā Wai o Horotiu marae, arranges or attends writing retreats, and sends representatives to the annual MAI conference.
