Social Education is a holistic theory and approach to working with children, youth and adult learners in range of settings. Social Education values a diverse workforce comprising of people who care for, help and guide others. This introductory paper presents the principles of social education, explores current approaches and potential applications for everyday practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Practical strategies for working with children and youth in a range of settings are explored. The focus is on understanding social education as an inquiring practice that explores answers to: What is going on for this child/young person? Where is our time best spent? And what approach will make the most difference? Students will apply their learning by creating a practice portfolio.
Strategies for working with students who have special and additional needs is the focus. Principles of Universal Design for Learning will be applied to social education practices. The role that creativity and the arts play in nurturing learning, wellbeing and social development are practically explored.
Leadership to promote social change is the focus. Social educators often work with marginalised communities. This course equips students with strategic skills to analyse presenting issues and to find solutions. Students will apply their learning in a real-world project.
