The mission of People and Culture at AUT is to empower our people to make AUT a place where people love to work and learn. Our staff have roles that are unique, challenging and complex – as a large university, AUT employs a wide range of diverse people who work across a variety of workplaces. Our focus is on embedding behaviours and skills that define the expectations of AUT's people: everything we do is about creating the best employee experience possible for AUT staff.
Our teams, roles and skills
We have around 45 staff spread across five teams within People and Culture who engage collaboratively with each other to support AUT’s staff.
Our HR Business Partnering team is highly consultative and collaborative, focused on partnering with our client groups in developing people strategies and initiatives to deliver their business goals.
We proactively work with business leadership, providing advice and guidance through the diagnosis of people and organisational challenges and opportunities like:
- Change management projects and initiatives
- Strategic and operational workforce planning
- Providing coaching support for managers and leaders.
- Supporting leaders in developing and managing their teams for success
Our Talent and Culture team is people-focused and provides a range of services, including:
- Extensive professional development support to meet the needs of our leaders, academics and professional staff
- Dedicated recruitment and executive search support to AUT managers across ‘manager-led’ and ‘recruiter-led’ talent acquisition requirements
- Support in the prevention of bullying and harassment
- Designing and guiding improvements to staff capability and engagement as AUT transitions to new ways of working through the employee lifecycle
Our Health, Safety and Wellbeing team provides proactive strategic support and partnering services to our people and the organisation.

We align our goals around staff wellbeing, strategic relationships and resources, focusing on improving the work environment by building individual and organisational capability and capacity in the professional management of risk.
Our people-centred approach includes:
- Leading risk management with a health and wellbeing focus
- Viewing the health and wellbeing of our community as a business-as-usual activity, and with the same importance as safety
- Seeking and developing collaborative, simple and straightforward turn-key solutions to our processes, enabled by technology and shared success
Our HR Shared Services team is systems and process savvy. It is responsible for:
- Processing the delivery of the fortnightly payroll
- First-level enquiry management
- Processing most transactional administration requirements across the HR lifecycle
- Provision of HR reporting.
- Operational management and development of AUT’s HR information systems
- Driving our digitisation efforts
We also determine processes, infrastructure, technology and vendor management to drive consistent business results to leverage People and Culture strategies and University directions.
Our Employment Relations team provides employment relations and industrial relations strategies to support a sustainable, agile and high-achieving workforce. The academic workforce is highly unionised; their union being well-resourced and litigious, resulting in high levels of interaction with the Employment Relations team and considerable support required for university management at both strategic and operational levels.
We guide and support People and Culture and the wider University in all employment related matters.
