The Estates Group manages the planning, development and maintenance of AUT’s built environment and its safety, security, transport and hospitality functions. We have 240 staff broadly divided into two groups – the Property team and Hospitality Services.
Our goal is to provide students and staff with attractive, functional campuses and facilities with inspiring work and learning spaces.
The largest part of the Estates Group, the Property team keeps the University running day to day and also undertakes construction on behalf of AUT. They ensure the entire AUT property portfolio (across three campuses) is maintained, complies with all building codes and standards, is cleaned, landscaped and is running adequately to accommodate AUT’s 3,000 staff and 30,000 students.
The Property team consists of 6 distinct areas.
Commercial Services is the team responsible for running all AUT cafes, catering and events services.
They manage several in-house catering venues as well as the commercial leases for around 30 other service providers including shops, cafes, coffee kiosks and even an Auckland Transport Customer Service Centre.
This group also manages hundreds of in-house events on behalf of AUT as well as conferences and events for external organisations each year.

AUT is an aspirational place that attracts bright, positive and ambitious staff, and supports achievement. Our values – tika, pono and aroha (integrity, respect and compassion) – are at the heart of everything we do.
Although a large directorate, staff in the Estates Group are masters of working together. You can’t paint classrooms without rescheduling classes to another room; new building projects need input from Hospitality Services around the inclusion of cafes, plus the timetabling team to ensure space is suitably allocated; and maintenance or building work can affect car parking. In all of these situations, the different teams within the Estates Group work together to find solutions.
